PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Hampton Roads area is seeking to improve the quality of recycling with ‘Feet on the Street.’
“We have to tackle the confusion around recycling head-on — and we have to do it together,” said askHRgreen.org team leader Katie Cullipher in a release.
According to a release, the initiative is implemented by askHRgreen.org. It consists of The Recycling Partnership teams as they examine materials found inside local recycling containers, and later provide residents with feedback on how to improve their recycling.
“Real-time feedback has proven effective nationwide, and we’re confident it will drive significant improvements in recycling habits right here in our region” said Cullipher.
‘Feet on the Street is the first part of a three-year EPA grant project. It is set to survey 32,000 households in the areas of James City County, Newport News, Norfolk, Suffolk, York County and Virginia Beach, stated in a release.
“The City of Virginia Beach is excited to work with askHRgreen.org and The Recycling Partnership to learn more about the sources of contamination in the recycling stream and to advance any effort that can improve recycling, reduce waste to the landfills and improve the economical disposal of refuse,” said Director of Public Works for the City of Virginia Beach, LJ Hansen, in a release.
Residents can also expect to receive additional recycling materials in the coming months. Materials include educational cart stickers, enhanced convenience center signage and targeted communications.
“Giving residents more access to information and better resources will have a major impact on the quality of the recycling programs in Hampton Roads,” said Cullipher, in a release. “This is a watershed moment for recycling in our region.”
