PPD: Churchland High School teacher arrested on multiple sexual assault charges

UPDATE: A judge dismissed two misdemeanor charges of sex with a minor 15 years or older against Jarvis Green because the statute of limitations ran out.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A Churchland High School math teacher was arrested and charged with the sexual assault of a minor.

On Thursday, Portsmouth Police arrested 34-year-old Jarvis Green. He was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child in a supervisory role, two counts of sodomy and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

This all stems from an investigation that began last fall after allegations were made against Green. Residents say the news is unsettling.

“I’m terrified,” Churchland resident Jeannette Caquias said. “Safety should be paramount when it comes to our children — they are our future, [and] you want them to be safe, even if it’s from people that are supposed to be teaching them, you want them to be safe from everybody. You never truly know somebody.”

According to Portsmouth Public Schools, Green has been with the school system since 2015 in the mathematics department. He is currently on administrative leave. We were made aware of this letter that was sent home to Churchland High School families.

Good afternoon, Churchland families –

I have an update regarding a criminal investigation into one of our employees. Last fall, I wrote to you to inform you allegations were posted on social media regarding one of our staff members. Police immediately began its investigation at that time.

We have just been made aware that charges have now been filed against that employee.

While this is a police matter, I am sharing this news with you in order to reiterate what I shared with you last fall. This is a difficult and heartbreaking subject matter for us all: students, staff and families. Our school counseling team remains available for anyone who may want to talk. We also have the division’s Here to Help webpage at ppsk12.us/heretohelp where you can find the link to Care Solace, a mental health service provider.

While I am limited in what I may be able to share, if you have any specific questions or concerns, please reach out to me directly. Thank you for continued support of Churchland High School.

Thank you”

Residents hope a thorough investigation can be done.

“We should live in a world where justice is served the right way to the victims and they should see justice,” Caquias said.

Police urging anyone with any information regarding this case to come forward.

Green is due in court for an arraignment on Jan. 31.
