PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Police need help to find the driver in a fatal hit-and-run crash last Monday.
Anthony Etheridge was struck after midnight last Monday, Oct. 12 while walking at the intersection of George Washington Highway and Davis Street in Portsmouth.
“The most challenging thing would be that a person who was such a living — a caring — soul had to leave this world like that and be left to die in the middle of the road just by himself,” said Raeshelle Jones, Etheridge’s sister.
She and other friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil Sunday night to remember Etheridge.
“His giving heart his studious nature, the way he loved all things God created and all of his people,” said his cousin Amanda Donaldson.
Police say an unknown vehicle hit him and left the scene.
“He was hit by a car and left for dead. Somebody knows who did something. Somebody has got to come forward,” said his cousin Amanda Donaldson.
Etheridge’s family said he died after being on life support for several days. Although it is hard to let him go, they say there is a silver lining.
“He was able to donate two of his kidneys and he saved two different lives, and so we were able to have something really beautiful come out of all of this,” said his sister.
But they still are waiting for justice.
“We wanted justice. We would like for anybody that may have witnessed anything, seen anything, talk to someone may be scared to come forward, just please call the tip line. You don’t have to give your name or nothing just any information you may have. He deserves justice. He did not deserve to go out like this.”
Police are asking anyone who may have photos or videos of the crash area between midnight and 3 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12 to send them to investigators.
