PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Marine Police confirmed with 10 On Your Side Monday that a body was found in the Thursday morning boat fire in the Elizabeth River.
Officials said the body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office for identification and an autopsy. Foul play has not been ruled out, according to the marine police.
Marine police also stated the business that originally lifted the boat out of the water still has the vessel on their property on a barge. The vessel was considered a total loss, according to responding fire crews.
Crews with Portsmouth Fire and Rescue said the boat fire occurred just before 6 a.m. on July 3. Upon arrival to the scene in the Elizabeth River along the I-164 West Norfolk Freeway, fire crews noted smoke and flames coming from the vessel.
Originally, fire crews said the vessel was unoccupied and that no injuries were reported.
Dave Wakeman was on his way to work when he spotted trouble.
“It was fully engulfed in flames,” Wakeman said. “The smoke was going hundreds of feet into the air. It was dark black. … I saw that there was already one or two boats approaching it, and it was still anchored, so it was kind of lucky it didn’t drift toward the bridge and possibly cause some problems over there.”
That first response came from WF MAGANN corporation.
“I saw the rope on the dinghy burn loose,” said Eric Page, the superintendent port captain for WF MAGANN, adding “The bow of the dinghy was on fire. I called over the radio for another boat to go get the dinghy. My guys went on this boat with this two inch pump and put the suction in the water and started putting the fire out. Within about 10 minutes, they pretty much had the fire out and under control.”
