Officials to honor Portsmouth WWII veteran on 100th birthday

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A WWII veteran and community leader will be celebrated this Saturday, July 12 in honor of his 100th birthday.

Horace Savage is a Portsmouth native who served in Normandy after D-Day and since retirement from the military, he has dedicated almost 40 years to the Portsmouth Public Schools community as a teacher, coach, and assistant superintendent.

This centennial celebration does not just celebrate Savage and his local impact, but also marks the launch of a scholarship fund in his name to benefit the students of Portsmouth.

This celebration is a ticketed event. Proceeds will go towards the Horace Savage Scholarship and will take place at St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church in Portsmouth beginning at 11 a.m.

Several local officials plan to attend this event, including Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover, Senator Louise Lucas, Speaker of the House Don Scott, and Delegate Cliff Hayes.
