Norfolk food pantry expands to Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Salvation Army Portsmouth Corps is expanding across Hampton Roads as the food pantry — a service that has always been available in Norfolk — is now also in Portsmouth.

Salvation Army area Commander Major Chris Flanagan said this expansion comes as demand remains high for the services across Hampton Roads.

“A few months ago, we were all scrambling to get eggs, and then you put on top of that the price of gas and the price of electricity,” Flanagan said.

On these hot days, some families are having to choose the electric bill over groceries.

“A day like yesterday, today, and this week, you can imagine what peoples electric bill is going to be,” Flanagan said.

Adding a foodbank in Portsmouth could lead to adding more services coming to the Portsmouth area.

“We are trying to, hopefully, with the food pantry, get established in Portsmouth,” Flanagan said. “That will lead us to opening doors to provide opportunities for the elderly to come in have a time of fellowship and create that program here.”

The Portsmouth food pantry is open from 1 to 3 p.m. every Thursday at the corner of Portsmouth Boulevard and Airline Boulevard. No sign up is required.
