Neighbor speaks out after witnessing Portsmouth graduation party shooting

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth police are continuing to investigate a shooting that occurred at a graduation party on Viking Street late last night that resulted in 4 people being taken to the hospital.

“I heard the shots, I ran to my room inside my house, and it went off for a good, I’d say, about 2 minutes and it was it was a rapid,” one neighbor said. “Once it did happen, everybody just went dispersed.”

According to the neighbor, the graduation party seemed safe at first. They came outside just to check on what was going on outside their home.

“I literally was on the phone with my best friend, and I said, ‘they’re not over there doing you know, they’re not doing anything,'” the neighbor said. “No sooner than I let that sentence out of my mouth, that’s when the shots rang.”

The neighbor said a stray bullet went through their window and into their bedroom, landing in a spot where they usually stand.

“Everything I touched in my room had, like, little shards of glass,” the neighbor said. “And I’m trying to figure out where the glass is coming from. It went through my bedroom window, hit my TV and ricocheted from my TV through my bathroom wall.”

What started out as a normal evening resulted in their home becoming a crime scene.

“They had, from this tree right here to my bush wrapped around so no one could get past this whole area, even in my backyard,” the neighbor said. “It’s a little scary to know that they’ll just shoot through your window and you don’t have anything to do with it. It doesn’t put us at ease to always be on the defense when we’re supposed to be comfortable at home.”

The four people taken to the hospital are expected to recover.

We’ve reached out to the Portsmouth Police for an update on the case but have not heard back from them yet.
