PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia-based nonprofit Mercy Chefs is hosting a Back-to-School Block Party in Portsmouth Wednesday. The event is from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on 711 Washington Street.
The nonprofit is holding the event to alleviate the financial burden of school supplies for children and parents alike while bringing the community together over warm meals.
“We’re excited to host this block party as a way to love and support our neighbors here
in Portsmouth,” said Chef Gary LeBlanc, Founder and CEO of Mercy Chefs. “It’s more
than just a meal or a backpack—it’s about showing families they’re not alone and that
their community stands with them.”
In addition to free meals, Mercy Chefs will have a live DJ, a gaming truck, an interactive mad scientist demonstration, a dunk tank and a pie-eating contest. Students can also expect to receive free haircuts and backpacks loaded with school supplies.
