PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Tuesday afternoon, a sign went up on the door at Cock Island Bar and Grille saying closed until future notice. This was after an overnight shooting at a Portsmouth bar left one man dead, police say.
Portsmouth police said officers responded to the Cock Island on Airline Boulevard just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. Officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
Police said medics pronounced the man, later identified as 34-year-old Jermaine Marcus Iriarte, of Portsmouth, dead on scene. The case is being investigated as a homicide.
Officers also had crime scene tape around a nearby 7-Eleven store, but did not say if that scene was related to the shooting. In that case, the victim was shot in the arm. He left before police arrived, but showed up later at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Investigators interviewed witnesses at the scene, but did not release any further information.

We’re told ABC investigators were also on the scene. They have 48 hours to decide of Cock Island will have its liquor license suspended.
Portsmouth Police say they’ve been called out to the bar19 times over the past year. The calls include stolen cars, fights and shots fired.
