Man dies after shooting at South and Godwin streets in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth detectives are investigating after a man was fatally shot Wednesday night near South Street and Godwin Street.

Police say a 60-year-old man was shot in the upper body around 11:50 p.m. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

No suspect information is available at this time.

“It’s very frightening because, as I said, bullets have no name. You could be shooting at one person and hit somebody else in their dwelling,” said resident David Grimes, who lives in the homes nearby.

One neighbor told 10 On Your Side she heard five gunshots around the time of the shooting, but was too scared to look out her window.

Grimes says he heard police sirens but didn’t go out to see what happened.

“It’s saddening, it’s very saddening. I’m 60 myself,” added Grimes.

He says he’s thankful for every day and prays the violence will come to an end.
