Police: Woman seriously hurt after shooting in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A woman was critically hurt after a shooting on Wednesday morning in Portsmouth, police said.

Around 8:05 a.m., Portsmouth police responded to a call for a shooting in the 2800 block of Airline Boulevard at the Wash Land business.

Upon arrival, officers found a woman suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Medics transported the victim to a local hospital.

Carl Williams, a member of the church-based group Andrews Brothers, is working to take back the community.

“It was heartbreaking, and [as] we begin the new year, I want it to be a year of love and compassion,” Williams said.

It’s yet another scene that can contribute to urban traumatic stress disorder, especially when children come across a crime scene.

“And that’s what we’re talking about,” Williams said. “It’s a shame when a child knows about a crime scene more than they know about a jump rope.”

A nearby resident was traumatized when a team of police officers, including a K9 and an officer with an assault rifle knocked on her door. After a few minutes of discussion, a search of her backyard and trash can, the officers stood down and left.

The resident said she was unaware of the shooting.

Williams said he is praying for the victim and the entire community.

“We can do this,” he said. “We can show more love to one another.”

This is an active investigation. There are no additional details available at this time.
