Police: 1 killed in Virginia Beach shooting; suspect in custody

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — One man is dead and another man has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following a shooting Friday night on New Colony Drive in Virginia Beach, police said.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 5500 block of New Colony Drive around 9:57 p.m., and when they arrived, they found Jamele Newby-Gibson, 20, of Virginia Beach in the roadway with a gunshot wound, and he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Detectives with VBPD’s homicide unit investigated the shooting and identified Nashaun Reid, 19, of Virginia Beach as a suspect. He was arrested, and in addition to the second-degree murder charge, has also been charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

“I have to commend the work of our first responding zone officers and our detectives who diligently worked this case from the onset and were able to identify, apprehend and charge the suspect in this offense within six hours from the time of the incident,” Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate said in a statement. “To be able to remove a dangerous individual from our community and bring closure to a grieving family in such a short period speaks volumes to their dedication and professionalism.”
