NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A woman has died and a man has been arrested following a fatal DUI crash in Norfolk Saturday evening, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash happened on I-64 at Northampton Boulevard.
A man, identified as 35-year-old Devon Acevero, was driving a 2005 BMW in the eastbound lanes at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and caused it to run off the roadway around 6:35 p.m., state police said.
Acevero struck a jersey wall, causing the vehicle to cross all lanes of traffic and collide with a 2021 Jeep Cherokee, which rolled off the roadway.
The driver of the Jeep was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and is expected to live. His mother-in-law, 70-year-old Paulette Angela Chambers, was in the Jeep when it crashed. She died from the impact.
Court documents show both Acevero and his passenger were not hurt in the crash.
While speaking with Acevero, court documents show a VSP trooper on scene noted he had blood shot and glassy eyes. Troopers also say Acevero smelled like alcohol.
According to court documents, Acevero said he hadn’t been drinking, but had been up for 48 hours.
Despite his claim, Troopers gave him multiple field sobriety tests. Court documents said he showed signs of impairment on every test.
State police said Acevero was under the influence and will be charged with DUI manslaughter. He is currently at the Norfolk City Jail.
WAVY confirmed Acevero has been in the Navy since 2023.
