NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting in Norfolk involving an officer over the weekend.

According to a press release, it happened after Norfolk Police responded to a report of a man tampering with cars in the 2400 block of Juniper Street around 12:15 a.m. Sunday.

When officers arrived in the area, police say they encountered a man who ran from the scene.

The release said the man displayed a firearm in the direction of an officer during the foot pursuit, and the officer discharged his service weapon, striking the man once.

The man was able to flee in a vehicle to the 5900 block of Granby Street where he was taken into custody without incident, according to the release.

The man was sent to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in critical but stable condition. No officers were injured.

A firearm was also recovered at the scene, police say.

NPD’s Office of Professional Standards will be conducting a separate administrative investigation into the incident and the officer has been placed on administrative duty, police officials say.

Crews were on the scene Sunday morning, with officials blocking the road in the 2400 block of Early Street.

Neighbor Charles McCarthy says people trying to get into cars has been happening more often in that neighborhood.

“Pulling door handles, looking in, running up in driveways, it’s gotten really bad in the past year,” McCarthy said.

He says he had something similar happen to him on his street a few weeks ago.

“I had a run in with kids going through, checking doors and I went out and yelled at them, they took off running and jumped into a car,” he said.

This is still an active investigation, and no further information has been released.
