NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Law enforcement officials said two men went to the hospital after an shooting in Norfolk late Saturday night.
Police said they responded to Presidential Parkway around 11:30 p.m. for a shooting. The street runs through the campus of Norfolk State University.
Both of the men injured in the shooting were taken to the hospital where police said one man is being treated for life-threatening injuries and the other is expected to survive.
Native to the area and student at Norfolk State, Aaron Evans, said he feels safe but hopes the campus can be safer.
“Just to hear this about it is heartbreaking. Yes, I feel safe on campus. I wanted to see more security wise, be more in tune on the campus,” Evans said.
When Evans found out about the shooting, he said he immediately reached out to friends.
“I’m thinking of my friends on campus seeing if they’re alright, checking on them seeing if they’re okay and a couple of my other friends friends — checking with them,” Evans said.
He encourages others on campus to be aware of your surroundings, because incidents like these have occurred in the past.
“Last year a kid had passed; it was the same incident a kid had passed — I think it was my freshman year. It was tragic,” Evans mentioned.
Both Norfolk Police and the Norfolk State University Police Department (NSUPD) determined there was no immediate threat to the campus, but NSUPD increased patrol around the university.

Access to the campus has been limited through Gate 1 until further notice, the school said.
Regular NSU dining hall hours will resume on Monday, April 21.
Anyone with information related to the shooting incident is encouraged to contact NSUPD at (757) 823-8102 or the Norfolk Police at (757) 664-7000.
