‘She’s doing good’: 8-year-old out of the hospital after being hit by a car

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Na’Zaurya Shead smiled from ear to ear as she went down a slide at the park. Now out of her hospital bed at CHKD, her family is thankful to have their 8-year-old girl back home after she was hit by a car last October.

“She’s doing well,” said Na’Zaurya’s mother, Laquanda Shead. “She’s with her two cousins, and that’s all she wants to do, anyway TikToks and play.”

Shead said Na’Zaurya was released from the hospital in January after she had been in the hospital after being hit by a car on Church Street in Norfolk.

Shead told 10 On Your Side in November the little girl had damage to the back of her head and a pelvic injury.

She’s now going to regular doctor’s visits as she recovers.

“She goes to therapy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday — I mean, it’s just a lot of, you know, follow-up appointments, stuff like that,” Shead said.

Her mom said as she recovers the 8-year-old thinks about what happened to her.

“She talks about it and she always just like she wished she never got hit because, you know, there are certain things she can’t do,” Shead said, “like [getting] in a pool and stuff like that in summer coming up. So, she’s like, ‘I wish I never got hit by a car.'”

Her mom tries to keep her positive and active with different activities outside.

Shead said she is working to get her back in school.

10 On Your Side reached out to Norfolk Police Department to learn the latest on the investigation, but we haven’t received a response.

“I can’t wait to see her fully get to the school stuff and knowing spelling, writing, doing her name,” Shead said. “Healing is coming because she’s here and she’s playing and we’re all happy to have her back.”
