NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Phase two of the runway rehabilitation project at Norfolk International Airport is scheduled to begin in April.

During the project, crews will repair aging asphalt and concrete portions of the primary air carrier runway.

Phase one of the project was completed in November 2023. The second phase begins April 1 with construction on Runway 5.

According to airport officials, construction will require nighttime runway closures from April 1 to November 15, 2024. During this time, the runway will be closed to all airline operations between 12:15 a.m. and 5:15 a.m.

Norfolk International Airport, along with airlines and suppliers, have been planning the project for over a year.

The rehabilitation efforts are expected to extend the life of the runway by more than 20 years.
