Portsmouth man arrested in connection to gun on ODU’s campus

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been charged with brandishing a firearm in connection to an incident on Old Dominion University’s campus where he brought a gun on campus, ODU police said.

The person was seen leaving the Student Recreation and Well-Being Center Sunday.

Christian Kent, 21, of Portsmouth, was arrested and charged with brandishing a firearm. Reports state that Kent did not point the gun directly at any individual.

As a result of this incident, guest passes have been suspended for the recreation center.

“As dedicated professionals in campus law enforcement and public safety, ODUPD will always prioritizes safety above all else,” Police Chief Garrett Shelton said in a release. “We sincerely appreciate the community members who embodied the belief that together we can safeguard ourselves and our community by reporting any suspicious activity. Your attentiveness played a crucial role in the investigation.”

This was the second recent incident involving an individual with a gun at the university. The first one occurred Feb. 26. Two men were killed in a shooting at ODU’s campus.
