NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) —Two families are mourning the loss of their loved ones and trying to raise money to send each back to their homelands for burial.

Dalila Villanueva Calderon, 32, was know by friends as Nairobi. She died early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on E. Little Creek Road near Wards Corner in Norfolk. Police say she was a passenger in a car driven by 25-year-old Justino Balladares Diaz, who also died. A second passenger, a 21-year-old woman, was also taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from her injuries.

Norfolk Police posted on X that they got a call about the crash around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Diaz, who was the driver of the vehicle, died at the hospital after the crash early Sunday morning. According to family, he moved to Norfolk from Nicaragua around three years ago.

His family is trying to raise money to have his body sent back to Nicaragua for a burial. The family stated they never got to say a proper goodbye, and that they hope to make their last goodbye special. Those interested in helping can donate using this GoFundMe.

Family and friends will also be fundraising through a food sale on Saturday. You can order Salvadorian sandwiches to pick up starting at 12:00 p.m. The cost is $13. The number to call that day is (757) 550-5824

Nairobi Villanueva Calderon was a single mother who held two jobs.

“She was a great person. She was faithful to you. She was a ride and die for you,” said Calderon’s sister-in-law Osiri Amaya.

Amaya said Calderon moved to Norfolk two years ago in search of the American dream, like her brother.

“She wanted to be with him, I guess, and also wanted to help him, help their parents back in Guatemala as well,” said Amaya.

Calderon’s 13-year-old son lives in Guatemala. Her 6-year-old lived in Norfolk with her.

“Yeah, he’s been asking about her. He’s so small, he doesn’t really know what’s going on yet,” said Amaya.

No one knows yet what caused the accident early Sunday morning on E. Little Creek Road. When police arrived, they found the black sedan split in two from the force of a crash into a tree.

Amaya said Calderon had worked until 2 a.m. at a restaurant and was likely on her way home.

Now they’re trying to get her home to Guatemala, to the loving arms of her parents who will lay her to rest.
