NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of a woman on Bagnall Road in Norfolk Thursday afternoon.

Shaiqui M. McKesson, 23, has been charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was taken into custody in Virginia Beach and is being held without bond in the Norfolk City Jail.
According to police, officers were called to the 900 block of Bagnall Road in the Calvert Square area of the city around 2 p.m. and found that someone had shot Erica J. Wright, 22, of Pittsburgh, Pa. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.
There’s yet another renewed call to stop the violence in the wake of Wright’s death.
Several residents said they didn’t know the victim or the suspect, but Hattie Green said she heard the gunshots.
“All I heard was ‘Pow, pow, pow,'” Green said. “My granddaughter ran in the house and said ‘Grandma, there’s a shooting.’ I said, ‘Girl, that ain’t no shooting. It’s fireworks.”
It was, indeed, a shooting, and a young woman died.
Few details have emerged in the shooting, but Wright was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.
“He’s not from this community,” said Calvin Williams, who speaks with authority in discussions about Calvert Square, having walked those streets as the founder of the My 2K Foundation. “I know he’s not from this community.”
In recent months, his team has made progress in quieting violence in Calvert Square. Wright’s death has left Williams crestfallen.
“Not only my organization, but the community, has been working on keeping the community safe,” Williams said, “even to the point where they actually made us a one-way so that people couldn’t come out here, just drive through and get the shooting.”
