NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — During a Norfolk School Board presentation Monday, a site plan was proposed that would involve demolishing Ghent School for a new $11 million football field for the new Maury High School.
A schematic scheme design for the new school, valued at nearly $230 million, was approved in March, with the understanding that new design plans would be proposed moving forward.
The Norfolk School Board met with the Ghent School PTA May 28, in which they vocalize a few concerns including a need for separate upper and lower playgrounds, appropriate access for fire drills and emergencies and keeping Ghent and Maury school students separated after school hours.
The school board adjusted their construction phasing plan to ensure the Ghent School playgrounds, basketball courts and leaning cottages would be in place until the Summer of 2028, but are continuing to prepare alternate design approaches.

The preliminary schedule from the NSB would see phase 2 of the site plan and building plan approved during Winter of 2025, leading up to phase 1 of construction.
Construction could start as early as Summer of 2026 with the hopes of seeing the new Maury High School operational by the start of the Fall 2028 school year.
