Norfolk Department of Health hosted Back-to-School Community Day

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — There was a great turnout for the Norfolk Department of Health Back-to-School Community Day.

The event took place on Southampton Ave. in Norfolk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It featured a health fair with community resources, vendors, a gaming bus, giveaways and fun activities.

Families were also able to get required school immunizations and sports and school entrance physicals. Organizers said the demand was so great that they ran out of supplies early.

“So you can get the business part done and the kids can kind of calm down with some gaming and food trucks so hey, all in one, they have everything covered.” said Norfolk Resident Latoya Hall.

Organizations the department partnered with include Sentara Health, Norfolk Public Schools, Old Dominion University, YMCA of South Hampton Roads, Norfolk Police Department, Norfolk Family Justice Center, the Virginia Zoo, Chartway Credit Union, Nauticus, REACH Inc., YWCA South Hampton Roads, Norfolk Community Emergency Response Team, and many more.

This event was one of many efforts by the Norfolk Health Department to ensure that every family feels welcomed and supported in getting ready for the school year.

Norfolk Public Schools will host their “Unity in the Community Back 2 School Celebration” on August 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Norfolk Scope. For more information, click here.
