NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man has been arrested, accused of fatally shooting his grandfather Tuesday afternoon on W. 42nd Street in the Highland Park neighborhood.
Police said the call came in reporting the shooting around 4 p.m. in the 800 block of West 42nd Street.
The 67-year-old victim was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died. He was identified on Wednesday as 67-year-old Michael D. Sturdivant, of Norfolk.
10 On Your Side spoke with the widow of the victim, Mildred Sturdivant, who says it all just happened so fast.
She says she heard her husband and grandson come home and was about to grab her computer when she saw her grandson holding a gun toward them.
That’s when he started shooting.
“When I looked, my husband, he fell to the floor,” she said. “I said, ‘Oh Lord.’ I said, ‘Mike, just hold on baby,'” Mildred Sturdivant recalled.
She got up to lock the door but the shooting didn’t stop.
“He tried to, you know, kick the door in, and that’s when I heard a few more shots,” she said. “And when I jumped to the side, I felt it hit me with one of the bullets.”
Luckily, the bullet only grazed her shoulder.
Meron Hailu was walking nearby with her friend when they heard shots ring out.
She said hearing gunshots is like background music in their neighborhood.
“It’s something normal. I know this one’s a domestic shooting but I guess other times I just feel like gunshots are just something normal just to hear outside of my house,” said Hailu.
As she returns home, Mildred Sturdivant says she just wants to know why this happened.
“My husband had exchanged a few words [with him], but still, that didn’t give him no reason to take my husband’s life,” she said.

Police said around 7 p.m. that they had taken the man’s grandson, Jamiele C. Pender, into custody without incident. He’s since been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm.
Detectives have yet to release additional information in the case.
Pender is being held at Norfolk City Jail without bond.
