NPD: 17-year-old boy shot and killed on West 35th Street

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A teenage boy was shot and killed Friday afternoon in Norfolk, according to police.

The call came in at around noon in the 800 block of West 35th Street.

When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy who was pronounced dead at the scene, and residents of the Park Place neighborhood are in mourning. Community activists say it best — the violence must stop.

For community activist James Washington Jr., these are the crimes he wants to eliminate. Washington and other community members walk several Norfolk neighborhoods, building relationships and providing residents and the youth with positive outlets. But when this happens, he’s reminded of just how much help is still needed.

“The city can’t fight this by themself, the police can’t fight this by their selves,” Washington said. “We need us to come help each other out because too many families are hurting, too many families are crying, too many young people are dying.”

Norfolk police haven’t released any further details on this shooting or on a potential suspect. But for those who live here, it’s another life taken too soon.

“Stop all this foolishness and all this anger at each other and let’s come together and fight this issue that we got in our community,” Washington said. “Let’s fight this cancer called violence.”
