NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A new candidate has recently thrown his hat into the ring for Norfolk’s Commonwealth’s Attorney.

On Saturday, John F. Butler, a Navy veteran, former federal prosecutor and Managing Assistant United States Attorney for Norfolk, announced his bid. Butler will be running against current Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi — who announced his campaign for re-election in January, and has served as Commonwealth’s Attorney since Jan. 1, 2022.

Fatehi states that since he has taken office, homicides have reduced in the city by over 42%, and violent crimes have reduced by 40%.

According to a release from Butler, he is supported by Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander, Sheriff Joe Baron, Treasurer Daun Sessoms Hester, Commissioner of the Revenue Blythe A. Scott, City Council Members Jeremy McGee (Superward 6), Thomas R. Smigiel Jr. (Ward 5) and Courtney Doyle (Ward 2).

“John will work to build a justice system that is both fair and effective,” Alexander said. “He is mission-driven and capable of delivering results. John has a proven record of success in the courtroom, holding violent criminals accountable while prioritizing community engagement programs to prevent crime before it happens. I am proud to stand with and endorse John Butler for Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney.”

Butler stated he intends to prioritize public safety through emphasizing the need for a “fair and principled approach to justice.”

“I’m going to put public safety ahead of politics,” Butler said. “I’m going to professionalize and depoliticize the Commonwealth’s Attorney office. I don’t care what neighborhood you live in, or what you economic background or race is — no one should have to live in fear. We should all feel safe. And we should all be safe.”

Butler has been a Norfolk resident since 2012, and calls the city a wonderful place to raise a family.

The primary election will be held on June 17, 2025.
