NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore is held a food distribution on Friday, in light of the ongoing government shutdown, which the organization said drew a large turnout.
The event was scheduled for Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 880 N. Military Hwy.
Shortly before noon, organizers confirmed to WAVY that the turnout was bigger than expected and they had to close the gates.
“Shutdowns create instability in people’s lives each day they continue,” said Christopher Tan, President and CEO of the Foodbank. “We’ve been here before, and we know what it takes to respond. The men and women who serve our country, and those who serve alongside them as civilian or contract employees, deserve to know that their community is here for them.”
Organizers said the event will be giving away fresh produce, lean protein and other pantry staples to 500 households impacted by the federal government shutdown.
“To help ensure a safe and equitable distribution, guests are asked to arrive with trunks empty and ready to receive food, remain in their vehicles during loading, and wait for a signal before pulling forward,” explained the Foobank of SEVA. “All vehicles should enter the site via Poplar Hall Drive.”
Companies assisting with the giveaway include the City of Norfolk Department of Economic Development, Perdue, and Food Lion.
