NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – People in Hampton Roads are feeling the effects of the government shutdown as we enter week three, which was clearly represented at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore ‘Shutdown Relief Mobile Distribution’ event in Norfolk Friday.

Hours before the foodbank distribution even began, cars were lined up as early as 5:30 a.m. to get fresh produce, protein and even pantry staples.

“It’s a big benefit. It helps the community, [and] helps a lot of people. As you can see,” said Keith Warren, who was waiting in his car.

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore said they had enough food Friday morning to feed 500 households.

The event was scheduled for Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 880 N. Military Hwy.

Shortly before noon, organizers confirmed to WAVY that the turnout was bigger than expected and they had to close the gates.

For many, this could be the first biweekly paycheck missed since the shutdown began.

“I needed to restock my pantry. It certainly will put a decrease or a dent in the grocery bills. As we know, they’re all climbing higher and higher and higher. And this is a welcome relief,” said Warren.

The foodbank picked Military Circle Mall because it is central and accessible between the military bases and federal office.

The foodbank was a well-oiled machine this morning as 10 On Your Side saw them unload an assortment of food.

“They’re there for a purpose. And the purpose is to provide and to help people that are in need. And it works out well,” said Warren.

If you missed today’s distribution, the foodbank has more than 225 partners. Click here to find more information about the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.
