UPDATE: Norfolk Police identified the bicyclist as 73-year-old Johnnie Pitt Jr.

He died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital while receiving treatment for his injuries.

Pitt’s obituary shows he died the day after the accident.


NORFOLK, VA. (WAVY) — A cyclist hit by a car on Hampton Blvd. Friday morning.

According to a tweet from Norfolk Police, the cyclist was struck by car at Hampton Blvd. and 27th St. around 4:45 a.m. Friday. Paramedics took the cyclist, identified as a 73-year-old man, to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Initial investigations revealed that a Ford sedan was going south on Hampton Boulevard when the bicyclist entered the street and was struck by the vehicle.

Investigators say they do not believe speed or alcohol contributed in the crash.

At the time of the crash, Hampton Boulevard was shutdown in both directions while officers investigated. The roadway later reopened.
