Community meeting held for future design of Maury High School

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A community meeting was held Thursday night for the future design of Maury High School.

It took place in the school’s cafeteria, and many community members came to learn about the project and provide feedback on it.

“I like it,” said resident Doug Knack. “I think it’s really thoughtful. I think it’s going to accomplish a lot.”

It was the second community engagement meeting held for the project, which aims to build a new school while also preserving and repurposing the current school’s original historic structure.

Officials gathered up all the feedback they got during their last meeting and came back to the public with new renderings to display. The new renderings showed a state-of-the-art campus with things like outdoor learning spaces and new athletic facilities.

“The community is very sensitive to the historic nature of Maury, and that has been a resounding item that has continuously come up,” said Robert Hudson, vice president of Heartland Construction. “And I feel that our design team has done a great job taking those elements of historic Maury and using those elements and incorporating them into the facade of the new school.”

Hudson explained that they’re in the design phase right now with nothing set in stone, but if all goes to plan a new school could be built in just a few years.

“The only way that we can be successful is to be engaged with the community and to get that feedback,” Hudson said. “So we encourage the community to come to these meetings and be vocal about what their hopes and dreams and goals are for this facility.”

The next opportunity for community engagement on this project will happen on Feb. 10.
