NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A new weapons detection system debuted at CHKD’s main location at 601 Children’s Lane in Norfolk Thursday.

The weapons system will screen for weapons in the hospital’s main lobby as well as the emergency department.

“Our new weapons detection system will help us ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and staff,” said Ellen Bollinger, CHKD’s safety, security and emergency management director. “We appreciate our community’s support and understanding that weapons should not be brought into our hospital.”

CHKD does not allow anyone to bring in firearms, knives, tasers and pepper spray. Additionally, the hospital will dispose of any weapons detected and will display signs around the campus to remind visitors.

One father told 10 On Your Side he supports anything to keep children’s main priority getting better while at CHKD.

“Especially for the kids that you have something that’s going to protect them, I’m all for it,” said Sherard Bethea.
