NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An overnight fire that destroyed a barbershop and caused at least some damage to all of the businesses in a strip mall on Sewells Point Road in Norfolk Friday has left lingering questions about its cause and what happens next.

No one was injured in the fire, as the businesses there were closed at the time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

At the scene, the smoke smell was evident well after it had started. Part of the roof to the structure collapsed, and as you could see through a window, there was a major amount of damage — charred-out wreckage, front-to-back, stacked on top of each other. It was a disaster inside.

“[I’m] confused and everything,” said Ysabell Reyes of D’Estilo Barbershop. “I’m feeling very bad about it.”

In its own surveillance video, they could hear a smashing sound before the fire started. A man who stays across the street said he heard the same sound.

“I hear[d] a loud glass being broken,” said Bryan Cuje of Norfolk. “As soon as I heard the glass, it was like a bomb went off, like, ‘Boom.’ It wasn’t glass anymore. This was like an explosion-type deal.”

Cuje said he then saw a watermelon-shaped hole in the window as the flames behind it spread quickly. He called 911.

According to officials, crews were called to the 7600 block of Sewells Point Road at 2:20 a.m. for the report of a commercial structure fire. When units arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames visible in an attic of the multi-unit strip mall, with the bulk of the fire appearing to have happened at the D’ Estilo Barbershop, though there was some damage in each of the strip mall’s businesses.

More than two hours into the call, firefighters were still spraying hotspots.

The fire was marked under control just before 3 a.m., officials say.

Around 4:30 a.m., crews were still on scene with water on the building looking to put out any hot spots. Part of the roof collapsed as a result of the fire.

One of the owners of Lempira, located in the same shopping center, told 10 On Your Side their business has a lot of smoke damage due to the fire. Shop owners said the businesses in the strip mall are insured, and a few of them have multiple locations in the region.

Another employee of D’Estilo Barbershop, Pastor, said he’s spent a number of years cutting hair there, and lost thousands of dollars worth of equipment in the wreckage.

“We [will] try to figure out what exactly happened,” Pastor said, “because it’s something weird. … It’s really hard right now for me.”
