NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Norfolk police are investigating a shooting on Modoc Avenue in the Ocean View area Friday morning that killed a longtime resident.

Rodney Cross, 55, was shot and killed outside his home on Modoc Avenue near Beachview Street around 4:47 a.m.

There’s no suspect information at this time and detectives have not released a motive.

Cross was a hard worker and beloved father, according to friend and coworker Matthew Beitler.

“He was a great guy. I gave him a ride to work every day for two or three years, then my car broke down and he gave me a ride to work every day,” Beitler said.

“He would even take me to pick up my son from day care and take him to my house. He was a great dad.”

Beitler worked with cross for several years, and says he worked the early morning shift, so he was likely on his way to work when he was shot and killed.

“It doesn’t make any sense, going to work and getting shot,” Beitler said.

“I loved him to death,” he said.
