NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A beloved and respected high school basketball coach in Newport News will be honored this weekend.

This Saturday, November 13, Warwick High School’s basketball court will be dedicated to the late coach Ben Moore. Moore coached 28 seasons on the Peninsula, including 24 at Warwick.

In 2017, Moore died after speaking at the funeral for former Warwick High School star player Jonquay Byrd. Byrd was killed in a head-on crash involving a Newport News police aide.

Moore was more than a coach. To many, he served as a mentor well after their time on the court.

Now his son, Chris, is following in his dads’ footsteps, as a basketball coach for Thomas Nelson Community College. He got the job about eight months after his father died. Warwick staff will allow TNCC to play a game against Bryant & Stratton’s junior varsity team on the newly dedicated court on Saturday.

“I can’t tell you the emotions that are going to be going through me on that date, but I can tell you it is a powerful moment,” Chris said. “It’s just crazy how all of it manifested and now it’s tied together.”

Chris said one of his last conversations with his father was about Thomas Nelson.

“He asked, ‘If you could have any job right now, what would it be?’ I told him I wanted to have an imprint on Thomas Nelson Community College,” Chris said. “I went there (although he didn’t play basketball), and I thought it had a lot of potential.”

For Chris, it’s special he’s able to carry on his father’s legacy.

“It’s just crazy how all of it manifested and now it’s tied together,” said Chris, who also played three seasons for his father at Warwick. “For me to be in this job, for me to coach the first game in that gym where I went to school, where I grew up in, I watched him change lives in, and see that court with his name on it, which is something that I thought was important, just to put the stamp on his legacy.”

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and the dedication is at 1:45 p.m. The TNCC vs. B&S game is at 2 p.m.
