NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — There are life-threatening injuries resulting from a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 westbound in Newport News Friday night, Virginia State Police said.

State Police said they are investigating a multi-vehicle crash between mile marker 250 and mile marker 249 on I-64 westbound in Newport News. The call for the crash came in at around 9 p.m. It involved multiple vehicles and injuries were reported.

The Virginia Department of Transportation was at the scene helping with rerouting traffic while State Police investigated the crash.

The preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a Dodge Durango, 45-year-old Willie I. Greene, was traveling on eastbound I-64 at high speeds when he struck a car in the back. The car, a 2022 Hyundai Sonata, lost control, ran off the roadway, struck a guardrail and came to rest in the westbound lanes.

The Durango crossed over into the westbound lanes, swiping a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and striking a Nissan Altima head-on, according to State Police.

Following the collision, an improperly restrained five-year-old in the Altima was thrown from their car seat and suffered life-threatening injuries.

VDOT said all westbound I-64 lanes were closed as of 10:10 p.m. Friday but have reopened as of 1:21 a.m. Saturday.

State Police said the investigation is still ongoing. Charges are pending.
