NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A teenage girl died Wednesday following a three-vehicle crash in Newport News, according to police.

On June 17, the Newport News Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and St. Thomas Drive around 7:25 p.m. in reference to a three-vehicle crash.

A preliminary investigation determined that a Chevrolet Equinox driven by a 17-year-old boy was traveling southbound on Jefferson Avenue at a high rate of speed and making lane changes erratically.

The Equinox struck an Acura RDX SUV driven by a woman, who was also traveling south on Jefferson Avenue in the right-hand lane after making a right-hand turn at St. Thomas Drive.

The Acura subsequently struck a Honda Civic, also driven by a woman, which was in the adjacent lane.

A 17-year-old girl, who was the passenger in the Equinox, was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. She succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday, June 25.

There were no other major injuries reported.

The driver of the Equinox was charged with driving under the influence. Additional charges are pending.
