PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Monday marked the 19th day of the government shutdown, as President Donald Trump and Republicans are locked in a standoff over health care subsidies.

Rep. Bobby Scott hosted a roundtable on what he calls a ‘Health Care Crisis.’ Scott, along with other health care experts, discussed health care concerns.

Scott said more than 20 million Americans will be notified that their premiums, co-pays and deductibles will rise if the Affordable Care Act Premium Tax Credit is not extended.

According to Scott, 32,000 people will see their costs rise in the third district of Virginia. Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans said if the tax credit ends, a family of four that earns $64,000 a year in Virginia’s second district could see premiums increase by $2,500 a year.

In September, Kiggans introduced a bipartisan Premium Tax Credit Extension Act that would protect families, seniors and small business owners from a massive health care premium increase. That bill has been referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means.

In a release, Scott said, “this comes after Republicans cut $1 trillion in Medicaid in their Big Ugly Law. If not addressed or reversed, the Republican Health Care Crisis will cause 15 million people to lose health insurance, and millions more will see increased costs. Many health care clinics will be forced to close, including three already closed in Virginia.”
