NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is dead after being shot on Aqua Vista Drive in Newport News Wednesday night, police said.

Newport News Police said they responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 600 block of Aqua Vista Drive, near 6th Street, around 9:26 p.m., and while officers were on their way to the scene, the call was upgraded to a shooting.

When they arrived, officers found a woman outside who had been shot at least once, and they determined it to be life-threatening, police said.

The woman, later identified as 27-year-old Spirit Pryer, was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Photos from the scene show a large police presence with multiple evidence markers placed on the ground.

Police are investigating the shooting, and there is no information on a suspect at this time.
