NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Shannon Jones has officially won the race for Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney over incumbent Howard Gwynn, who has served in the role for over 30 years.

Jones pulled in 57% of the votes. With no Republican challenger in the November election, she is poised to become the city’s next commonwealth’s attorney.

Howard Gwynn released this statement Wednesday, “The voters of Newport News have made their decision, and as I have done throughout my career, I trust the citizens of Newport News.  I look forward to continuing to serve through the end of my term with the same commitment, dedication, and integrity this office has always shown.”

Jones has served in both the Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and in the City Attorney’s Office. During her time in these positions, her team says she has prosecuted serious offenses and advised safety departments.

A post on Shannon Jones campaign Facebook page after her win, said, in part, “Together, we made history. Together, we chose progress, integrity, and a new voice for justice in Newport News.”

Voters in Newport News went to the polls Tuesday, or voted early, in two local Democratic primaries: Treasurer and Commonwealth’s Attorney.

The winners of these races will be on the November ballot.
