Newport News announces details for 2025 One City Marathon Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The City of Newport News has announced details for the 11th annual One City Marathon Weekend, set to take place from February 28 to March 2 of 2025.

The marathon itself will begin on Sunday, March 2. at 7 a.m. in Newport News Park. Runners will traverse the entire length of the city, with the Victory Arch in The Yard District downtown serving as the finish line. The course will take runners past various cultural amenities, educational institutions, businesses, and neighborhoods, per the press release.


Races begin on Saturday, March 1 at 8 a.m. with the Sentara Health Plans Maritime 5K in City Center at Oyster Point. It will be followed by the Nautica Mile presented by Ferguson Cares at 9:30 a.m. Tradition Brewing Company in City Center will also be hosting family-friendly activities from 8 a.m. to noon.

In addition to the One City Marathon, Sunday’s events will also include the BayPort Credit Union Marathon at Menchville High School, beginning at 7 a.m.

The weekend will conclude with the One City Celebration at Coastal Fermentory in The Yard District, which runs until 2 p.m. that Sunday.

Next year’s event will be held in collaboration with the National Black Marathoners’ Association (NBMA) Annual Summit.

The National Black Marathoners’ Assocation is the largest and oldest non-profit organization that supports Black American distance runners. The NBMA’s objectives are to:

The group is open to everyone, regardless of athletic ability or previous marathon experience. More than 40% of members have reportedly never completed a marathon.

Registration is now open for all races at www.onecitymarathon.com. Runners can participate in more than one race or register for one of two multi-race challenges to earn additional meals, a special challenge finisher item, and bragging rights, the city says.
