NNPD: 1 injured after shooting on Forrest Drive

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The Newport News Police Department responded to a shooting early Friday morning.

One woman describes the shooting to 10 On Your Side off camera:

“It woke me up on my sleep. Yeah. It was like boom, boom, boom, boom. It was like rapid shots, like really fast,” the woman said. “And I just slid off the floor on, um, off the bed, on the floor, grabbed my daughter and just lay there.”

According to officials, around 5:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Forrest Drive and Woods Road for reports of a shooting.

Officers arrived at the scene and found an adult male suffering from a non life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was then taken to a local hospital.

10 On Your Side’s Deja Parker was at the scene, where she saw a damaged car in a ditch and investigators searching the surrounding area.

A local unidentified parent says the area needs more safety measures in place.

“More security out here for one, because I feel like they don’t really have security. That’s probably why something is always happening,” the parent said. “I mean, they have security, but not 24 hours, so. Yeah, more security. Uh, especially safety for the kids. This happened like a five. So, you know, my daughter, she go to the bus stop, like around 7:30 A.M., so you never know.”

The parent said she plans to move out of the area for her family’s safety.

“I really was going to say I didn’t know they was, um, rerouting,” the parent said. “But, I mean, at this point, it’s kinda worrying in general, because there’s always something is happening, and it’s like, I really heard it by my window and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh’, you know? So, I don’t know. Just get ready to move pretty much.”
