NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A late-night shooting left one person dead in Newport News Thursday. 10 On Your Side spoke to a man who called the person killed his ‘mother’.
Police were dispatched to a shooting at a residence in the 1300 block of 24th Street at 10:03 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers located a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. Police have identified her as 47-year-old Janene Kellam and said she died at the scene.
An adult male suffering from injuries was also located at the residence. He was transported by medics to a local hospital.
The injured man came back to the scene around 6:30 a.m. 10 On Your Side’s Kiahnna Patterson reports, the man was beaten and bloodied.
Robert Green said three men forced their way into his home, beat his brother and shot his mom to death.
“I hid in the closet. They came in with a .45. They shot two times, shot her in the head and in the face,” explained Robert Green.
While our crews were on the scene later in the day a Community Services Board worker came by to meet with a client. He described the house as a boarding home.
A former neighbor and friend also spoke to us. Connie Walker said of Kellam, “She didn’t never do nothin’ wrong she didn’t do no drugs or nothing- seriously that girl didn’t do nothing but go to the store, play numbers or something like that and come back home.”
Another young man in the neighborhood, Terrence Brown, told WAVY.com “If you were in the corner store at the same time she was, he’d buy you something to eat.”
Kellam lived right down the street from the Bronx Deli. Owner Billy Abdella described her as a sweet lady. “I’m stunned because I see her everyday you know, if you see a person everyday still right now I don’t believe what happened to her ,” he said.
There is no suspect information at this time and the investigation continues.
