NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The city of Newport News got its fair share of snow, and cleanup efforts on the roadways have been underway since Wednesday’s snowfall was slowly melting.

Many were taking full advantage of the snow before it went away. That included Mary Dawn Carrier and her family.

Carrier said the roads weren’t too bad on her drive to Riverview Farm Park to sled with her family.

“Even the neighborhood road, it’s cleared out, didn’t have any hard time driving at all,” Carrier said.

Crews in Newport News have been working in 12-hour shifts since before the storm to put brine down in preparation. They also wrapped up plowing on some of the smaller roads Friday afternoon.

Street maintenance administrator Jason Calbert added they’ll be on standby in case anything develops on the roads overnight Friday.

“We still have some folks available to respond if we get any calls for icy areas or and notified of anything tonight,” Calbert said. “We still have equipment mounted and ready to respond to that as well.”
