Dimair Jones, 26, of Newport News, in addition to the first-degree murder charges, faces three counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and the use of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Around 12:55 a.m. Aug. 8, 2023, Newport News Police officers were sent to the 400 block of Stallings Court in reference to shots fired, and when they arrived, they found the victims inside a residence, and three men were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The men were later identified as Alvin Eugene Holiday, 61, of Williamsburg, Monroe McGilvary Jr., 60, of Williamsburg and Derek Rico Jones, 36, of Newport News.

A search warrant indicated that two of the men were found shot to death in the garage, and another man was found dead in a downstairs room. The search warrant showed that police collected at least 11 shell casings from the home, all .40-caliber, but the bullets were made by two different manufacturers: X-Treme Bullets and PMC Ammunition.

Detectives also found suspected smoking devices for crack cocaine and other drug paraphernalia in the home, according to the search warrant.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew held a press conference on the day of the shooting, confirming that police found cocaine and marijuana in the house. On that day, Drew said he believed the motivation for the killings would boil down to drugs and an argument.

“NNPD’s homicide detectives have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to solving this case,” said Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew in a statement. “Their tireless work has not only led to today’s significant arrests but also reflects a deeper mission to ensure the safety of our community.

Drew also thanked the community for their patience and support.
