NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Nelson Viera-Green had recently taken up bike riding as a way to get in shape and had been riding for several miles earlier this month when he was struck by a car on a Newport News road, leaving the Rivers Casino poker dealer with broken bones and constant headaches as he recovers from the trauma.

According to police, on May 8 at 9:35 p.m., officers were called to an auto-pedestrian accident on Harpersville Road near Ferguson Lane, and when they arrived, they found an adult man who had been riding a bicycle, later identified as Viera-Green, who appeared to have been hit by a passing vehicle. The driver of the car involved did not stay at the scene.

“They hit somebody, and they just kept going,” Viera-Green said. “I don’t know how you can do that to somebody.”

Viera-Green said he doesn’t remember anything about the crash. The next thing he was able to remember was waking up in the hospital — scared and in pain.

“I had broken bones all in my hand, broken leg, concussion,” Viera-Green said. “A lot of memory loss, concussion, headaches. I’ve been having nothing but constant headaches.”

Viera-Green is a well-loved poker dealer at Rivers Casino Portsmouth. When his coworkers heard about the situation, they started a GoFundMe for him. It’s now raised more than $7,000.

“I didn’t expect anything like that. I’m grateful to all those people, because they’ve given me courage and strength to kind of move forward,” Viera-Green said.

Newport News Police told 10 On Your Side that the case is still open and that there is no suspect information available at this time.

Viera-Green is hoping the person who did this is caught.

“I’m going to pray to God and just have faith that he’s going to guide me in the right direction,” said Viera-Green, who is now unable to work while he recovers, and his health insurance through work doesn’t begin until July.

He’s unsure of what to do next and hopes by sharing his story, he can get guidance.

“If anyone has any kind of advice [that] can reach out to me when it comes to my situation that would be super helpful,” Viera-Green said.

Viera-Green asks anyone who can give him advice to email him at Pana300c@icloud.com
