NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The city of Newport News is gearing up for its 11th annual One City Marathon over the weekend.

The marathon, in partnership with the National Black Marathoners’ Association (NBMA), aims to capture the energy and togetherness of the city, all while showcasing the dedication to both personal and community success.

To kick off the race weekend, the event will also screen two documentaries. On Friday, Feb. 28, from 6-8 p.m., “We Are Distance Runners: Untold Stories of African American Athletes” will be screened at the Holiday Inn in Newport News City Center. The following day, March 1, from 5:30-7 p.m., “Breaking Three Hours: Trailblazing African American Women Marathoners” will be screened at the Holiday Inn in Newport News City Center.

Following the screenings, a moderated panel discussion will be held, featuring the directors and several runners who have made history. To register for the free screenings, click here.

Racing starts on Saturday, March 1 at 8 a.m. with the Sentara Health Plans Maritime 5k at Oyster Point. Afterwards, starting at 9:30 a.m., the Ferguson Nautical Mile Fun Run will take place.

The big race, the One City Marathon, will take place on Sunday, March 2 starting at 7 a.m. in Newport News Park, During the 26.2 mile race, runners will travel through the entire city, passing multiple cultural amenities, educational institutions, businesses and neighborhoods, all the way until the finish line in The Yard District downtown.

During the marathon, Michael Wardian, an Ultra Marathoner, will attempt to break the record for fastest marathoner dressed as Forrest Gump.

Runners are able to sign up for multiple races throughout the weekend.
