NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 20-year-old Newport News man is facing a long list of charges following an early morning police pursuit on May 19 officials say reached dangerous speeds.

A deputy with the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office was monitoring I-64 east near the Tallysville exit when the deputy clocked a driver going 113 mph in a 70 mph zone.

The deputy tried to pull over the vehicle, but the driver kept going, and continued on I-64 east, exceeding 130 mph at times, according to the sheriff’s office.

This all unfolded around 1:30 a.m.

The pursuit continued into James City County and then York County. The driver eventually pulled over on I-64 east at mile marker 236. That’s between the Lightfoot and Camp Peary exits.

When deputies went to arrest the driver, identified as 20-year-old Xavien Vargas, they discovered a passenger in the vehicle. The passenger told deputies Vargas refused to stop or let them out of the vehicle.
