PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Three years after Gov. Glenn Youngkin recognized Oct. 17 as “Missy Elliott Day” in Virginia, the hip-hop icon returned to her hometown of Portsmouth for a special reception in her honor, and she made a $35,000 donation to the HER Shelter.
Missy Elliott Day is regarded as a celebration “highlighting her legacy as one of the most influential figures in contemporary music and entertainment,” according to a news release.
“I always wanted Virginia, Portsmouth, to know how much Portsmouth, P-town means to me,” Elliott said. “So I’m always going to come back and make sure that I give back. This is very important.”
She said she is happy to be in a position to help bless others.
In addition to Youngkin naming Oct. 17 as a date to honor her in 2022, council members also voted unanimously to rename McLean Street “Missy Elliott Boulevard.” Elliott was present for the ceremony, which included performances from local marching bands.
