VIRGINIA BEACH (WAVY) – For Shannon Woodruff, the Golden Arches of the moral universe bend toward justice.
As we reported last month, Woodruff was trying to get McDonald’s to cover her dental bills after she bit into a sausage biscuit that shattered her left lower molar. She wasn’t getting anywhere with one of the world’s largest companies, so she contacted 10 On Your Side. We reached out to Mickey-D’s on her behalf.
Woodruff found out in the past few days that McDonald’s will in fact come through with some compensation.
“I’m just thankful that they’re doing the right thing,” she said Tuesday morning outside the McDonald’s on Birdneck, where she has eaten for decades.
Woodruff is lovin’ the fact that she’ll get reimbursed for the dental visits and crown that had to have installed.
“I was actually really shocked because I didn’t want to sue anybody. Things happen. I’m not a part of the dog-eat-dog world.”
Instead, she was part of the person-eating-sausage-biscuit world in early March. When Woodruff bit into the breakfast sandwich she broke the molar. She showed WAVY part of the tooth during our original story in May. She wasn’t getting anywhere with the fast food giant and contacted 10 On Your Side.
“I contacted y’all on a whim in the middle of the night, and I didn’t think you were gonna call me back in the next morning, but you called me. And then within two weeks, everything’s okay,” she said.
McDonald’s wanted proof that Woodruff’s tooth was healthy when she entered the restaurant March 5. She had it. As luck would have it, she had visited the dentist just two weeks before.
“Nothing was wrong with the tooth at all,” she said, and got her dentist to confirm as much with a letter to McDonald’s.
Woodruff says her out of pocket on the dental bills was about $700. McDonald’s has agreed to settle for $1,200, and she says the extra will go toward lost wages because of her dental visits.
“I’m very thankful I contacted y’all. I don’t think I would have gotten the money. I would have been fighting. I would have probably not gotten anything.”
Woodruff says she will continue to drive Door Dash for McDonald’s and continue to eat there. But she says next time she’ll try the bacon egg and cheese.
