NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Norfolk man who shot and killed a woman in a road rage incident back in August 2022 in the Oyster Point area of Newport News has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

As-Siddiq Abdul-Aziz learned the sentence on Jan. 26 in Newport News Circuit Court, after pleading guilty to an amended charge of voluntary manslaughter in the case. He originally was charged with second-degree murder.

He received 10 years in prison with two years suspended, and will have to have three years of probation upon release.

Abdul-Aziz killed 51-year-old Crystal Mittelstadter in the parking lot at the Oyster Point Plaza shopping center on August 26, 2022 after an apparent road rage incident, police said.

Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew called the case “horrific and tragic.”

“It’s a situation where anger, frustration and instead of de-escalating and just leaving or separating. Now a firearm is produced and shots fired,” Drew said.
