NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead on Sunday evening.

At approximately 7:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to Chalice Court for a report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, they located a man, later identified as 22-year-old Julian Richardson, inside a residence suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Richardson was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. There is no suspect information at this time.

Neighbor Robert Johnson tells 10 On Your Side, he doesn’t feel too safe in the area walking his dog.

“It shocked me because I’m like, ‘Why? Like how, how, how?'” Johnson said. ” … Like, shouldn’t it be some type of change in security or something so it shouldn’t happen again or something like. I was shocked. I was kind of scared to walk my dogs, honestly. Because I’m like, at the end of day, I got a bulletproof vest because of, you know, the neighborly situation … ”

Johnson encourages community members to speak up when there is an issue to reduce crime.

“It’s plagued with a lot of like, the like separation issues,” Johnson said. “Like people have different animosity issues with different people and nothing is being resolved. Everything is being built up and everybody’s saying what they can say instead of what’s making sense. Or, you know, I’m saying maybe people need to start calling the police.”
